| 2nd Sep | Beware Scam "emergency" emails | Hacked email accounts are being used to request money. |
WARNING - email scam
Some members may have received an email purporting to come from "Doreine Bates " (sic) but as you may have realised from the unlikely situtation and poor spelling it is a fake - do not send any payment!
Thanks to the number of members who contacted Dorien about the email , she has has been able to identify the list used and says " It appears that this originated in Swansea. Someone has hacked into the summer school email address and changed the password so that Peter Bransby and I no longer have access to it. This means I have no access to the email addresses and cannot send out a blanket email. Google are trying to get back the password so that I can access the addresses before closing it down and opening a new one. "
The person named in the "from" line is not the real source, this person works at Swansea and is equally a victim of the hacking.
If you receive other emails like this either contact the person it appears to come from if you know their real address, or one of the committee to check facts before taking any other action.
Webmaster comment:- This is a growing problem and a good way of avoiding it happening to you is to regularly change your email passwords - something that, although inconvenient, is actually good practice with all systems.
